This chess set commemorates the two African-American cavalry regiments who fought against American Indians during the late 19th century. Remarkable in their detail, Native American chessmen stand opposite pieces resembling the African-American soldiers.
"Buffalo Soldiers" was the name given to these soldiers by the Native Americans. Though the reason for the name is uncertain, it is felt that it was not given in contempt. Some believe that the American Indians saw in these men the same stamina and courage held by the highly regarded buffalo.
